Get Up! Get Down! is a jazzy funk band formed in 2022 by drummer Don Colton and guitarist Jon Chamberlain. The band’s name reflects their energetic and groovy sound, which blends jazz harmonies with the funk rhythms of the ’70s. Don and Jon had been talking about forming this band for years, and when they finally did, they knew they had something special.
Joined by Devin Ferguson on bass and Simon Harding on woodwinds and keyboards, Get Up! Get Down! quickly started building a following in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. Their repertoire includes original tunes as well as covers from some of the biggest names in jazz-funk, such as Lettuce, Soulive, The Meters, John Scofield, Medeski Scofield Martin and Wood, and Herbie Hancock. The band’s ability to seamlessly blend these influences into their own sound has made them a favorite among local music lovers.
Each member of the band brings their own unique musical background to the table. Don, playing drums since grade school, has performed with a number of local bands through the years, most notably with alterna-rockers Measure in the mid to late 90’s. Jon is a versatile guitarist who has played everything from blues to rock to jazz, and has also been a member of Harry Carrie, Measure, The Snozzberries, and Stackhouse. Devin is a solid bassist who has played with various local acts, including Twins, Joel Sires, Ben Rendall and Your Favorite Band and Never The Less. Simon is a talented woodwind player and keyboardist who has performed with numerous acts, some of which include Darius Rucker, Ben Folds, Marcus King, and the O.J.’s.
Get Up! Get Down! is a band that is not afraid to experiment and push the boundaries of jazz-funk. Their live shows are a testament to their improvisational skills and musical telepathy, as they effortlessly move from one groove to the next.
